Many people hear the two words – Mental Illness, and they cringe. It is a prevalent reality in Human Life, and ever present in our population. Of course there are many types of mental illness, and many levels of complexity. From extreme pathology of the mind, to the various forms of mental depression, we find a wide gamut of mental illness resonant in humanity. Most forms are treatable with medical care, and people can actually recover from some . However, mental illness is difficult and exhausting for those who are subject to it, either afflicted, or in a caring role. And billions are spent on treatment and cost to society, in combatting this extensive affliction. As each year goes by, the experts seem to up the percentage of people in the general population who suffer from some type of regular or periodic mental depression: 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%. The number keeps climbing, and as it does, so does the impact to the individual and those around them. As a people, as a society, and as a quality culture; we need to be empathetic to mental illness, aware, and action oriented towards the care and support of those afflicted; many times despite their denial and aggression towards treatment or care.

Mental Illness is often the original source for other personal and social problems. Mental illness oftentimes leads people into self medication with alcohol or narcotics; sometimes into self abuse, homelessness, spousal abuse, child abuse; and the list goes on. Treating mental illness starts with awareness, honest self and group assessment; professional support and counseling; and perseverance of all involved. It’s not easy, and recovery and treatment takes time, but in so doing, a life and surrounding lives are often saved from much misery.
